CFG-G. Zacheus MALTBY, b. June, 1754, at Northford (?), (Dan.3,
Dan.2, Wm.1). He was of Branford in 1775 (Rev. War. Rec.) and 1776,
according to his father's will, also in 1781, (see Deed of his
mother).
In 1797. "Zacheus Maltby buys land at Lee, Mass., in which he
is described as "of New Marlborough, Mass." This is only a fairly
long drive from Norfolk.
In 1800, he is called "of Lee Hatter."
Rev. Jonathan (4) Maltby wrote of him" "--Cousin Zacheus MALTBY,
brother to Deacon Benjamin, died about ten years ago." (Letter is
dated "Oct. 31, 1845," which would make his death about 1835) "in
Eden, State of New York. Know not but that his widow is still living. They had three daughters and three sons:--Jerusha, Lucretia,
Sabrina, Zacheus, Samuel and Jonathan, all living."
The Rev. War Service of Zacheus, follows:
"First Regt. General Wooster, 1775. Recruited in New Haven,
Conn. Raised on first call for troops by General, in April--May,
1775. Marched to New York latter part of June and encamped at Harlem. Took part in operations above Lake George and Champlain.
Assisted in the reduction of St. John's in October. Stationed at
Montreal (Canada). Adopted as Continental 6th Company, 1st. Regt.
Capt. William Douglas, of Northford." (Enlistment Roll is missing).
"Discharge Roll. Zacheus Maltbie discharged in Northern Department. Nov. 28, 1775."
Possibly this was Patience.
(Hist. Erie Co., N.Y. Vol. I) "East Evans (Jerusaleen) was settled
in 1815 by Zacheus Maltby and his son Jonathan."
(New Haven Rec., Vol. 8, p. 296. Sept. 1777)
"Zacheus Maltbie of Branford drafted to compleat the army and
refused to enlist, brought before the Court and judged not quilty,
but paid fine of #1-17-5."
Norfolk Rec., from Mrs. Howard Williston Carter, states:
"Zacheus Maltbie bought land in Norfolk, Conn., June 12, 1781."
"Zacheus and Jerusha Maltbie joined the Church of Christ of
Norfolk, Nov. 16, 1783."
Miss Ethel Lord Scofield found that the wife of Zacheus was
"Jerusha ROSE."
In 1783 "Jerusha Maltbie, adult, was bapt."
Also, 1783 (Norfolk Rec. Vol. III). "Zacheus Maltbie and Jerusha
removed to Vermont."
(First Census of United States, 1790) gives:
"Zacheus Maltbie. Litchfield, Litchfield
1 male over 16
1 male under 16
1 female."
(Coll. Conn. Hist. Soc., Vol. VIII. Revolutionary Rolls & Lists)
"Maltbie,--Zacheus.
